All spiritual traditions have contemplations and meditations to encourage mindful living. Consider the following:

Buddhism
A Koan – from Zen Buddhism – is a short story or metaphor to encourage the reader to observe what has always been there for the first time. Koans are designed to immerse individuals in thought, and thus help them become conscious of the ultimate reality.
